What should I know?

As parents we want the best for our children.  We watch over them as they grow, monitor their growth and nutrition, and schedule check-ups each year with their pediatrician.  When they are sick we are there to care for them.  When your child finally decides on the school that fits his or her needs and is accepted it is recommended that you become familiar with the services provided by the student health center on campus and their requirements regarding insurance.

Students with chronic conditions or illness:

College bound students with chronic illnesses should contact their student health center before arrival at school to make the staff aware of their medical history.  The student or parent should also contact any specialists in the area that they may need to be seen by and to arrange the proper authorization by their health plan to be seen by these specialists, if necessary.

Vaccinations Needed?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that by the time children reach 18 they have:

  • Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTaP) series and the subsequent boosters (Tdap)
  • Hepatitis A & B (HepA, HepB) series
  • Varicella (chicken pox) vaccines
  • Pneumococcal immunizations (PCV)
  • Inactive Poliovirus immunizations (IPV)
  • Meningococcal immunizations (MCV)
  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella immunizations (MMR)
  • Rotavirus immunizations (RV )
  • Yearly Influenza (flu) vaccination
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) series of 3 vaccines

Privacy Issues?

College Students over the age of 18 are considered adults according to the privacy rules established by The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.  Subsequently the college student must give permission to allow their parents to inquire about their health and educational status.  Most college health centers have a written statement on their website, or available at the student health center, for parents to read their exact standing regarding student privacy.  Just call and ask if you have any questions.
